Road Closure Details

Dear Resident / Business,

The IRONMAN Group in partnership with Cork County Council are again bringing IRONMAN Ireland and IRONMAN 70.3 IRELAND to Youghal and the surrounding areas of East Cork on the 19th and 20th August 2023. The weekend will see over 2,500 athletes take on the Full distance of 3.8km swim, a 180km cycle, followed by a 42.2km marathon distance run on Sunday 20th August, with the IRONMAN 70.3 on Saturday 19th where they will take on a 1900m swim, 90km cycle and a 21.1km run.

The event will have implications on traffic and access which are detailed in this letter and overleaf on the route and access overview. The cycle and run routes will be operated on a rolling road closure basis with full road closures in place (by order). Applications have been submitted to the roadworks unit in Cork County Council according to the guidelines set down for the road closure and times highlighted below and overleaf.

This map along with the full road closure notice and diversion routes can be viewed online at

The event organisers are working in partnership with An Garda Siochana and Cork County Council to ensure that disruption to residents and businesses along the route is kept to a minimum where possible during the event, but with an event of this size there will be delays on the route and surrounding areas. We would strongly advise to avoid travel near the course route where road closures will be in place on Saturday 19th August and Sunday 20th August 2023.

As per legislative guidelines, the specific road closures for both event days will be advertised through Cork County Council and in local newspapers.

If you would like to contact us with regards to the notice, please email cork@ironmanroadaccess.com or call 089 4604823 to speak to the local call handler.

Event Emergency Phone No:

In the lead-up to the event the IRONMAN Hotline will be open between 8am & 9pm daily from Tuesday 1st August to respond to any queries locals may have in relation to the above closures/diversions.

089 460 4823

On race day, in an emergency, if you are behind a road closure and need to get road access urgently please call this number as it will be manned in Race Control and we should be in a position with our stakeholders (Gardai, Ambulance, Fire, Coast Guard, etc) to assist you in getting in/out.

Coping with the closures

If you will be affected by any of the above closures and wish to avoid them we urge you to consider leaving ahead of your local closure coming into force and returning after it is lifted. If you travel for work we suggest you also consider leaving earlier than usual to avoid any issues.

If you come to Youghal for your shopping normally on a day when these closures are in effect then we have agreed with the local businesses that the best policy is to come on one of the earlier days in the week on this occasion OR defer your visit until first thing on Monday morning when all closures will have been lifted.

Businesses who may be affected by the event should also contact us in the lead-up - there will be opportunities during the weekend to get deliveries in and out and we will always work with you to minimise disruption.
